IV - Bogotá - Temples of the capital

Dochodząc do Parque Santander mamy obok siebie trzy kościoły – dosłownie ściana w ścianę.

***

When I reached Parque Santander I saw three churches next to each other – literally wall to wall. The first one which I saw.. oh sweet irony was Iglesia de la Orden Tercera. The church is small but very charming. Particular attention should be paid to the main part of the altar, which is beautifully enhanced with white walls and carved wood ceiling around it. It is said that the artist – Pablo Caballero – who made the altar construction in 1761 was so exhausted that he died as a madman .. but let's face it times were different then: P

***

Literally on the opposite wall is glued Iglesia de la Veracruz. This temple is considered to be a kind of National Pantheon because in its interiors are the graves of many heroes fighting for the independence of the country. The church was built in the XVI century. Immediately after the foundation of the city, given that it may even be built before 1550r.

***

And now we are coming to the third and perhaps the most important of all three churches, which is right next to and is dedicated to St. Francis – Iglesia de San Francisco. Guidebooks say that it is the oldest temple in the capital, which still stands. It definitely looks like one! Built between 1550 – 1567. What is the most eye-catching is the main altar dating from the XVII century, baroque filled with gold and ornaments, you can stare at it for hours – phenomenal! Another astonishing thing is the ceiling – green gold-ish Mudejar full of fine details truly delightful.
I would have made better pictures but photography was prohibited (as you can see: P)

Jedna z najważniejszych postaci w historii Kolumbii.

***

When it comes to Parque Santander which was mentioned above – let's be honest, it is more like a square than a park. It was named at the times of the republic. The main attractions here are the fountains and, of course, the monument of Francisco de Paula Santander. He was Colombian military leader in the war of independence against the United States of New Granada and the fourth President of Gran Colombia between 1819 – 1826. He was named the man of law – El Hombre de las Leyes. One of the most important figures in the history of Colombia.

III - Bogotá - Torre Colpartia y más

I wracamy znowu do Bogoty.. czarującego miasta pełnego uśmiechniętych ludzi i hipnotyzującej muzyki.
Rok temu w 2012r. zastosowano oświetlenie LEDowe i w nocy robi duże wrażenie.

***

I’m coming back to Bogotá.. a charming town full of cheerful people and mesmerizing music.
My walk along the Carrera Séptima started from visiting the Mirador Torre Colpartia. It is the tallest building in Colombia; is 196m high and was completed not so long ago just over 30 years ago in 1979. It has 50 floors. A great idea is to enter and see the panorama of the city in 360 degree version but we had more ambitious plans so I haven’t seen this one – another time. [for me this time Monserrate was meant to be.]
A year ago, in 2012 was placed LED lighting on the building so it’s very impressive at night.

***

Walking south, I saw a provincial theater – Teatro Municipal Jorge Elicier Gaitán. The first theater was opened here in 1890 and immediately became the center of cultural events of the city. Colombian leader Jorge Elicier chose this place for the stage of his political career.

***

When you walk down Carrera Séptima – which by the way looks more like promenade you will see Iglesia de las Nieves. The full name of the church is Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves – catholic church built in 1585r. It was one of the first churches in Bogotá. Since then has undergone many reconstructions. It has many elements of Byzantine style. The architect, who led the reconstruction and development of cathedral was Arturo Jaramillo. The interior is decorated with various paintings from the colonial era.

***

Today the plan wasn’t so overwhelmed with attractions just visiting Parque 93 and cafes – in the end I was in Colombia, the world capital of coffee.

***

Parque 93 in the eye of a foreigner is a small neat little square near the Zona Rosa [Zona T – for insiders – party district]. Apparently this is one of the most popular places in the capital for shopping and hollow of good restaurants. Note the trees. The main national plant is wax palm and the second in line orchid. We spend some time there after which we moved to the cafe next door – Juan Valdez.

***

And here a word of knowledge drawn from postgraduate studies. What is this Juan Valdez?
Juan Valdez is a brand of Colombian organization that brings together farmers and traders of coffee. Promotes Colombian coffee abroad. It is also a fictional character played by a real man dressed in traditional costume of coffee farmer with a donkey. It is also, as a part of promotion, coffee chain places like Starbucks or Coffee Heaven.

I - Bogotá - Bogotá Beer Company, Usaquén

Bardziej magiczny.

***

Well this is how some people are devoted to the things what they love.. my first steps in the lands of South America. After a 15 hour flight when it was night local time [i.e. in Poland already started the second day for me – jet lag] we went to the beautiful district of Usaquén. At night, everything has a different look. More magical.

***

It used to be a small town – now part of the great metropolis of more than 8 million people. The main square is Plaza Central de Usaquén with a beautiful church. Unfortunately it was after 22 so this kind of things are already closed for tourists.

Tutaj wspaniała architektura kolonialna komponuje się z ciemnością i światłem latarni nadając lekko tajemniczy wyraz. Kilka chwil spędzonych pod kościołem św. Barbary a potem clue programu czyli piwo w Bogotá Beer Company.

***

Here the magnificent colonial architecture blends in with the darkness and the light of lanterns, giving a slightly mysterious impression. A few moments spent near the Church of St. Barbara and then the most interesting part of the evening – beer in Bogotá Beer Company. Great place to meet with friends – something like our Warsaw Pawilony only smaller :-)

***

The thing which amused me the most is gas heaters. I bet that the temperature was between 18 – 20C so that no sweater is necessary but here gas heaters in bars are on [where in Poland we use them when is – 5C outside].
I almost died laughing when I saw them - and I felt like I was on fire when it turned out that I accidently choose a seat near one of them.

A tutaj jeszcze mały bonusik jak kościół św. Barbary – Iglesia de Santa Bárbara de Usaquén – wygląda za dnia.

***

And here is a little bonus how Church of St. Barbara – Iglesia de Santa Bárbara de Usaquén – looks at daylight.

V - Sintra - Miejscowe słodkości - Sweets

W ramach lunchu polecam zjeść ciasteczka tradycyjne dla Sintry w fabryce Piriquita.
A jakie ciasteczka..?
Już śpieszę z odpowiedzą:
– Travesseiro de Sintra – lokalne niesamowicie słodkie ciastko z kruchego ciasta francuskiego z nadzieniem jajecznym (to dłuższe);
– Queijada – tycie coś a’la serniczek z cynamonem.

***

For lunch in Sintra I recommend to eat cookies from traditional Piriquita factory.
What kind of cookies ..?
– Travesseiro de Sintra – Local incredibly sweet cake with brittle French pastry stuffed with egg cream (the longer one);
– Queijada – small cake something like cheese cake with cinnamon.

***

Today the we had Sintra in our plans for the second time, this time with Monika and Michał, our hosts. Same as before, the road from the Rossio train station to Sintra did not take more than 40 minutes. It is only a pity that we didn’t take flashlights with us because then we would have even more fun.

***

Quinta da Regaleira is stated on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The palace is also known as " Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire ", from the nickname of its first owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.

Ktoś, kto to budował musiał naprawdę mieć fantazję!
Mnóstwo tajnych przejść, wieżyczek i zakamarków.

***

It is a lovely picturesque gothic castle with loads of underground passages in the garden. There you can also admire the lovely small chapel as well as almost underground lake. The guy who built all of these had a really great imagination!
Lots of secret passages, towers and corners. This is the icing on the cake of the whole trip to Sintra.

***

I am really happy because of this mistake with my friend’s map. Thanks to that we were able to see the most beautiful place in Sintra so far. This summer house is pretty small but beautifully carved and decorated. The Japanese Garden is wonderful as well.

***

Palácio de Monserrate was built in 1858 for Sir Francis Cook, an English baronet.
If you don’t have much time you can easily omit the Moorish Castle but you can’t omit this masterpiece :-)
