Memories of EURO 2012

I pomyśleć, że 8 czerwca zeszłego roku odbyły się w Polsce i na Ukrainie mistrzostwa Europy – Euro 2012.
Był to niesamowity okres świętowania i wzajemnej życzliwości w mieście. Normalnie rzadko się widuje takiego zjednoczonego ducha na ulicach Warszawy [oczywiście były pewne incydenty ale po co o tym wspominać].
Wspaniały czas :D

Time passes by but the great memories are still in the back of my head. Last year on 8th, June took place in Poland and Ukraine EURO 2012.
It was an amazing time of celebration and kindness in the city. Normally rarely seen such a unified spirit in the streets of Warsaw [of course there were some incidents but it’s not worth to mention it].
A really wonderful time: D

Z okazji Euro w centrum pojawiły się syrenki. Jak wiadomo syrenka jest symbolem stolicy więc i ona wzięła czynny udział w tym widowisku. Pewnej czerwcowej gorącej soboty wybraliśmy się na polowanie na syrenki. Ponad 20 km piechotą po Warszawie w niesamowity upał – ale było warto!!
Relację ze spaceru umieścił Mateusz na swoim blogu. Zapraszam do lektury :)

On this occasion in the city center appeared colorful mermaids. As you know the mermaid is a symbol of the capital so she took an active part in the spectacle. One hot June Saturday we went on the hunt for all mermaids. More than 20 km of walk around Warsaw in incredible heat – but it was worth it!!

XII - Budapest - Gellért’s hill

Ostatni dzień pobytu w Budapeszcie... a właściwie nawet nie cały upłynął pod tytułem zdobywania wzgórza Gellérta. Najłatwiej chyba dojechać tam tramwajem nr 46.
Nie oszukujmy się... wspinaczka na sam szczyt zajęłam nam maksymalnie 20 minut, ale jestem przekonana, że można było to pokonać nawet w krótszym czasie :D

Last day in Budapest... we spent on Gellért’s hill. The easiest way to get there is by tram no 46.
Don’t fool yourself... climbing to the top took us up to 20 minutes, but I am sure that you could pull it off in less than that :D

Na samej górze stoi pomnik biskupa Gellérta. Według legendy to właśnie w tym miejscu podczas buntów pogańskich w 1046r. biskup zginął męczeńską śmiercią (część przekazów mówi o wrzuceniu go do beczki nabitej gwoździami a następnie zepchnięciu do rzeki).
Obok tego monumentalnego pomnika znajduje się również Cytadela.

At the top there is a statue of Bishop Gellért. According to the legend, this is the place were during the pagan revolts in 1046r. bishop was killed (some sources say that people back then threw him into a barrel studded with nails and then pushed into the river).
Next to the monumental statue is located the Citadel.

XI - Budapest - Great Synagogue

Erzsébetváros jest to dawna dzielnica żydowska Budapesztu. Wybrałyśmy się tam aby nacieszyć oczy wspaniałą Wielką Synagogą. W środku tej niezwyklej budowli znajduje się Muzeum Historii i Religii Żydowskiej.

Erzsébetváros is the old Jewish district of Budapest. We went there to admire the magnificent Great Synagogue. Inside this extraordinary building is the Museum of Jewish History and Religion.

Na tyłach za Synagogą znajduje się pomnik ku czci ofiar Holokaustu. Wygląda to bardziej na sztukę nowoczesną; mi osobiście kojarzy się z drzewem – płaczącą wierzbą.

At the back of the synagogue is a memorial to the victims of Holocaust. It looks like modern art; I personally associate it with the tree – weeping willow.

X - Budapest - Heroes' Square

Kolejnymi atrakcjami na Aleji Andrássyego jest Plac Bohaterów a na nim monumentalny pomnik Millenium, który w symboliczny sposób ukazuje 1000 lat dziejów państwa i narodu węgierskiego.

Other attraction on Andrássy Avenue is Heroes' Square with the Millennium monument, which symbolizes 1000 years of history of the Hungarian country and its nation.

Na 36cio-metrowej kolumnie w centralnej części placu stoi archanioł Gabriel. Według legendy przyśnił się on papieżowi by skłonić go do przekazania korony księciu madziarskiemu. Prostokątna płyta przed kolumną natomiast to Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza.

At 36meters high column in the center of the Square stands the archangel Gabriel. According to the legend, pope saw him in his dream and he persuade the pope to give back the crown to Hungarian prince. Rectangular plate in front of the column is the Tomb of Unknown Soldier.

Plac jest ogromny; po prawej stronie wznosi się największa hala wystawowa na Węgrzech a po lewej Muzeum Sztuk Pięknych.
Jak tam dotrzeć?
Wystarczy dojechać do końcowej stacji żółtej linii metra M1 – przystanek: Mexikói út.

The square is huge; on the right side is the largest exhibition hall in Hungary and left the Museum of Fine Arts.
How to get there?
Just go to the final station of the yellow subway line M1 - stop: Mexikói út.

IX - Budapest - House of Terror

Na większą uwagę na Aleji Andrássyego zasługuje Dom Terroru. Muzeum zostało tak zaprojektowane aby budziło grozę ale jednocześnie skłaniało do refleksji nad czasami, których dotyczy. Przypomina trochę nasze Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego w Warszawie. W Budapeszcie aż roi się od plotek, że ta instytucja nie utrzyma się długo mimo, że cieszy się niesłabnącym zainteresowaniem.

Wynika to z faktu zainstalowania czarnej ramy „TERROR” na budynku, która od zawsze jest kością niezgody. Z założenia miało to na celu straszenie ludzi.... ech.... faktycznie budynek odbiega wyglądem [nawet bardzo!] od reszty alei ale uważam, że to było zamierzone i tak powinno zostać.

One of the most intriguing buildings on the Andrássy Avenue is the House of Terror. The museum was designed so that it would arouse the feeling of threat but also tend to reflect on the times that it presents. A bit like ours Warsaw Uprising Museum in Warsaw. Budapest is full of rumors that the institution won’t last for long even though it has a remarkable popularity.

This is because of the installation of a black frame "TERROR" on the building, which has always been a problem. At first the idea was to scare people.... eh.... building actually looks way different than any others on this avenue [really a lot!] but I think that it was intentional and it should stay that way.

Muzeum powinni zwiedzić zwłaszcza Ci którzy interesują się historią najnowszą. Jest to instytucja poświęcona dyktaturom XX wieku – faszystowskiej i komunistycznej. Wystawy głownie są poświęcone Nazistowskiemu Państwo Niemiec i Związkowi Radzieckiemu jednak można tam również znaleźć odwołania do węgierskiej organizacji faszystowskiej strzałokrzyżowców i komunistycznej policji ÁVH [coś na kształt sowieckiego KGB].

Budynek ten to właściwe miejsce na tego typu muzeum. W latach 1937 – 1944 służył za siedzibę i więzienie strzałokrzyżowców natomiast przez następne 11 lat był siedzibą i więzieniem wcześniej wspomnianej stalinowskiej policji politycznej ÁVH.

Those who are interested in recent history should definitely visit this museum. The institution presents the story of the dictatorships of the XX century – both the fascist and the communist one. Most exhibitors are about the Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, however, you may also find Hungarian aspect of this which is fascist Arrow Cross Party and the communist police ÁVH [this organization was in a way similar to soviet KGB].

This building is the right place for such a museum. During the years 1937 – 1944 it was the headquarters and prison of Arrow Cross Party and for the next 11 years it was the headquarters and prison of the ÁVH Hungarian political police which was mentioned above.

VIII - Budapest - Andrássy Avenue

Kolejny dzień zwiedzana rozpoczął się od Aleji Andrássyego – która w 2002r. za niecodzienną urodę została wpisana na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO. Jest w tym dużo prawdy. Cała dzielnica w jakiej ona się znajduje – Peszt – jest raczej charakteru przemysłowego, a ta aleja przypomina zakamarki Budy.
Naszą przygodę rozpoczęłyśmy od stacji metra żółtej linii M1 – Bajcsy – Zs. ut.
Jest to najstarsza w Europie wybudowana jako pierwsza na tym kontynencie linia metra.

The next day began with a tour around Andrássy Avenue – this place for its unusual beauty was signed in UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002. It’s really true. The whole district in which is located – Pest – is rather industrial and while walking around this avenue you feel like you are in Buda.
The stroll started from the subway stop of yellow line M1 – Bajcsy – Zs. ut.
This is the oldest subway line in Europe.

Idąc tą malowniczą ulicą widziałyśmy mnóstwo pięknych budowli, rzeźb itp. Na dłuższą chwilę zatrzymałyśmy się przy Teatrze Nowym i Operze, które stoją na przeciwko siebie po przeciwnych strachach alei.

While walking this picturesque avenue we saw a lot of beautiful buildings, statues, etc. The most interesting sites were the New Theatre and Opera House, which are located on the opposite sides of each other.

VII - Budapest - St. Stephen's Basilica

Po długim i troszkę męczącym spacerze po wyspie Małgorzaty wybraliśmy się zobaczyć Bazylikę św. Stefana. Jest to największy kościół Budapesztu – przepiękna świątynia włoskiego renesansu. Łatwo do niej dotrzeć metrem; najbliżej jest niebieska linia M3 gdzie trzeba wysiąść na przystanku Arany Janos utca lub też jak kto woli pomarańczowa tudzież żółta M1 – przystanek Bajcsy – Zs. ut.

After a long and a little bit tiring walk around Margaret’s Island we went to see St. Stephen's Basilica. It is the largest church in Budapest – really beautiful temple of the Italian Renaissance. It is easy to reach using subway; close to the blue line M3 where you have to get off at the Arany Janos utca, or if you prefer orange or yellow M1 – stop Bajcsy – Zs. ut.

Środkową część fasady głównej zdobią korynckie filary a łaciński napis nad łukiem wejściowym głosi: „Ja jestem Drogą, Prawdą i Życiem”.

The central part of the main facade is decorated with corinthian pillars and the Latin inscription above the entrance arch which says: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life". 

Wnętrze jest ogromne i ciemne ale za to przepięknie udekorowane.

The interior is huge and dark but it is beautifully decorated as well.

VI - Budapest - Margaret’s Island

Po wyspie Małgorzaty uskuteczniony został długi spacerek jednak nic szczególnie ciekawego tam nie zobaczyłam. Element, który jako jedyny przykuł moją uwagę to Pomnik Symbolizujący Połączenie Budy Óbudy i Pesztu.

On the Margaret’s Island we decided to take a long walk but nothing particularly interesting was there to see. The only thing that caught my eye was a Monument Symbolizing the Connection of three parts of the current city Óbuda Buda and Pest.

Tutaj niestety nikt nie mówił po angielsku a miałyśmy ochotę na lody. Próba porozumienia się ze starszą Panią przy stoisku z lodami na migi, aby jej powiedzieć jakie smaki chcemy była nie lada wyzwaniem zwłaszcza, że każda z nas chciała dwa rodzaje ale – mission accomplished :)

Here, unfortunately, no one spoke English and we were craving for ice creams. The attempt to communicate with the elderly lady at the booth with ice creams using sign language to tell her what flavors we wanted was a pretty tough challenge, especially because each of us wanted two types of flavors .. but the mission was accomplished :)

V - Budapest - Parliament

Parlament to największy budynek na Węgrzech a co ciekawe największy również z gmachów parlamentów na całym świecie. Ta imponująca rozmachem neogotycka budowla zbudowana została w ciągu niecałych 17 lat. Wewnątrz znajduje się m. in. 691 pomieszczeń, 20 km [!] schodów, 8 dziedzińców.
Kopuła o wysokości 96m. przykrywa ogromną salę posiedzeń.
Ciekawym rozwiązaniem było umieszczenie głównej fasady gmachu od strony rzeki.

Parliament is the largest building in Hungary and interestingly the largest of the parliament buildings all over the world. This monumental, impressive neo-gothic building was built in less than 17 years. Inside you will find, among others. 691 rooms, 20 km [!] of stairs, 8 yards. Dome that is 96m high, covers a huge meeting hall.
A clever solution was to put the main facade of the building from the river.

Można tu dojechać nie tylko tramwajem ale również czerwoną linią metra M2 do przystanku Kossyth tér.
Budynek wygląda prześlicznie nie zależnie od pory dnia i nocy. Oto kilka ujęć.

IV - Budapest - Church in the cave

Aby dotrzeć na wzgórze Gellérta miałyśmy okazję przespacerować się Mostem Wolności. Jako ciekawostkę można napisać, że jest to najkrótszy most nad Dunajem a po II wojnie światowej został odbudowany jako pierwszy ze wszystkich mostów w mieście.

To get to the Gellért’s hill, we had the opportunity to take a walk across the Liberty Bridge. What interesting is that, this is the shortest bridge over the Danube river and after the II World War, it was rebuilt as the first one of all the bridges in the city.

Za mostem na przeciwko jest wzgórze gdzie w środku w grocie św. Stefana znajduje się Kościół w skale. Pomysł został poniekąd zaczerpnięty z groty w Lourdes.

When you cross the bridge there will be Gellért’s hill in front of you where, in the middle of the grotto of St. Stephen's there is Cave Church. The idea was somehow taken from the Sanctuary in Lourdes.

W kościele tym od kilku lat znajduje się polski ołtarz z Najświętszą Panienką Częstochowską.
Kościół skalny nie jest jednak muzealna pamiątką – jest „żywą” parafią.

Since several years in this church there is a polish altar of Our Lady of Częstochowa. 
This church is not a museum – it is still a "living" parish.

III - Budapest - Fisherman's Bastion

Baszta Rybacka – jak dla mnie najpiękniejsza część budańskiej starówki. Neoromańska budowla z początku XX wieku wzniesiona na pozostałościach dawnych murów obronnych – co ciekawe osobliwa nazwa pochodzi od cechu rybaków, którzy sprawowali pieczę nad tym fragmentem murów obronnych. Tu też znajdował się kiedyś targ rybny.

Fishermen's Bastion – well.. for me is the most beautiful part of Buda’s old town. It’s neo-romanesque building from the early XX century which was built on the remains of the old city walls – what is really interesting, the monument took its name from the guild of fishermen who took care of this part of fortifications. Here was a fish market before as well.

Jednak ludność jest podzielona co do wartości artystycznych baszty. Części mieszkańców nie podoba się, że jest zbyt podobna do budowli z Disneylandu. Cały ten kompleks tak wygląda, no może oprócz hotelu Hilton, który jest prawie przyklejony do kościoła Macieja i baszty.. ale chyba taki był zamysł.

However, a lot of people disagree with the artistic value of the tower. They don’t like it because it’s too similar to the Disneyland style. The whole complex looks like it was taken from Disneyland, maybe except from Hilton hotel, which is almost glued to the Matthias Church and the tower.. but I think that was the idea.

Jak dla mnie jest to najbardziej urokliwe miejsce w całym mieście dlatego też wróciłyśmy tu powtórnie :)

As for me it is the most charming place in the whole city so that’s why we came back here again :)

Mural - Alek, Rudy, Zośka

Mural z twarzami młodych chłopców z 23. warszawskiej drużyny harcerskiej.
Alek, Rudy, Zośka byli to członkowie Małego Sabotażu i dywersji w pierwszych latach II Wojny Światowej.
Ich losy są przepięknie opisane w literaturze faktu – książce autorstwa Aleksandra Kamińskiego „Kamienie na szaniec"

Mural – a big wall painting with faces of young boys of 23rd Warsaw's scout troop.
Alek, Rudy, Zośka – members of the Little Sabotage in the early years of World War II.
Their life is amazingly captured in fact literature – a book by Alexander Kamiński "Kamienie na szaniec"

Mural, który jest przedstawiony na zdjęciu można łatwo odnaleźć na boku jednej z kamienic na ulicy Okrzei przed skrzyżowaniem z ul. Sierakowskiego na warszawskiej Pradze zaraz przy Wiśle, w okolicach ZOO.

Mural, which is shown in the picture, you can easily find on the side of one of the buildings on the Okrzei street close to the crossing with the Sierakowski street in Praga District next to the Vistula and the ZOO.

II - Budapest - Matthias Church & the monument

Kościół Macieja to wyjątkowa wizytówka budańskiej starówki. Posiada 2 charakterystycznie różniące się od siebie wieże: południowa – strzelista, wysoka, smukła wieża Macieja, i północna – przysadzista wieża Beli.
W rzeczywistości budowla nazywa się świątynią pod wezwaniem Najświętszej Marii Panny jednak popularność zyskała dzięki królowi Maciejowi Korwinowi, który dwukrotnie tutaj się żenił.

Matthias Church is a unique piece of the Old Town in Buda. It has two distinctively different from each other towers: southern one – slender, tall tower of Matthias and northern one – squat Bela’s tower.
In fact, the name of the temple is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, however, it has gained its popularity thanks to the king Matthias Corvin, who got married here twice.

Na prawo od wejścia do kościoła stoi pomnik św. Stefana. Jest to pierwszy król i patron Węgier, usadowiony dumnie na koniu z krzyżem apostolskim w ręku.

On the right side of the church's entrance there is a statue of St. Stephen. He was the first king and saint patron of Hungary, sitting proudly on a horse with an apostolic cross in his hand.

I - Budapest - Holy Trinity Monument

Przyjazd do Budapesztu był lekko niefortunny.. ledwo zdążyłam na samolot przez kontrolę radioaktywną. Ale udało się i chętnie zdam relację co tam ciekawego można zobaczyć i co moim zdaniem było najbardziej przyciągające uwagę :)
Początek i koniec pobytu w Budapeszcie to zdecydowanie Buda. Jest to bez porównania najpiękniejsza cześć całej stolicy Węgier. Na zdjęciach powyżej i poniżej można podziwiać pomnik Trójcy Świętej.

Arriving in Budapest was a little bit unfortunate..but well... happens.. I've barely managed to catch the plane because of radioactivity alarm at the Modlin airport. But I've made it and happily I'm going to report what I saw there and what I think is the most eye-catching :)
The beginning and end of the visit in Budapest was Buda side expeditions. It is without a doubt the most beautiful part of the entire capital of Hungary. In the pictures above and below you can see the monument of the Holy Trinity.

Jest to kolumna morowa postawiona w tym miejscu na wniosek rady miejskiej po wielkiej epidemii dżumy w 1709 r., która zdziesiątkowała 2/3 miasta ówczesnej Budy.
Jest to już druga kolumna, która stoi w tym miejscu – ta jest zdecydowanie bardziej okazała – pierwsza mniejsza postawiona po zarazie w 1691 r. ewidentnie nie wystarczyła skoro epidemia wróciła :P


Obecny pomnik jest bogato zdobiony postaciami świętych co miało uchronić przez kolejnym nawrotem choroby.

A jak w ogóle się tu dostać?
Wystarczy dojechać czerwoną linią metra [najstarszego w Europe] do stacji Széll Kámán tér.
Lub dojść dłuższym spacerkiem od strony Mostu Łańcuchowego.

It is a column which was placed there for the request of the city council after the great bubonic plague in 1709 r. At that time 2/3 habitants of the Buda city died because of it. 
This is the second column, which is placed here, much bigger one – the first one was smaller, placed just after the disease in 1691 r., but bubonic plague came back so the people thought that it happened because the other column wasn't enough and they’ve build a bigger one just in case :P

The current monument is richly decorated with figures of saints, whose job is to protect from the next relapse of bubonic plague.

And how do you get here?
Just get the red underground line [the oldest one in Europe] and get off at Széll Kámán tér stop.
Or take a longer walk from the Chain Bridge which is really nice.

Świąteczny czas / Christmas time

Przyszedł kolejny czas zimowy.
Jak co roku ta pora nie napawa mnie zbyt wielkim optymizmem bo zimno to mój odwieczny wróg ale bardzo lubię patrzeć na Warszawę pokrytą białym puchem z okien swojego cieplutkiego domku.
Jak co roku również w grudniu zostało włączone oświetlenie świąteczne. W czwartek poszłam sprawdzić i przekonać się na własne oczy jak ono wygląda.
Poniżej wrzucam kilka zdjęć.

Winter time has come again.
Like every year, this type of the season does not help me looking in optimistic way on what is going on around.. well.. as some of you know cold is my eternal enemy but I really like seeing Warsaw in a white coat of snow when I’m staying in my cozy warm apartment :P
As every year, in December, the Christmas lights were turned on. On last Thursday, I went to check it out
Here I put some pictures.

Oświetlenie jest prześliczne.. prawie zupełnie różne od tego sprzed roku i kilku lat wcześniej.. gdyż poprzednio każdej zimy wyglądało dokładnie tak samo. Tym razem mamy poustawiane: bombkę obok pomnika Kopernika, różnego rodzaju prezenty i cukierki niedaleko hotelu Bristol i pomnika Mickiewicza, a ukoronowaniem tego jest Zamek Królewski, na którym z rzutnika wirują gwiazdki na fioletowym tle.

The lightings are lovely.. completely different from those which were for several years in Warsaw on Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets.. before at each winter it looked exactly the same. This time we can see: Christmas glass ball [which is not glass at all :P] next to the monument of Copernicus, various gifts and goodies near Bristol hotel and the Mickiewicz monument. The culmination of these attractions is the Royal Palace, where are displayed the visuals on the walls.

Przypomina mi to święta sprzed 2 lat w Como we Włoszech, gdzie byłam na Erasmusie..[ na pewno będę to opisywać w przyszłych postach :D] Tam też na kilku najważniejszych budynkach w centrum miasteczka były rzutniki i kolorowe atrakcje na elewacjach budynków takich jak ratusz czy teatr itp.
Warto zobaczyć fotki a jeszcze chętniej zapraszam samemu na spacer aby się przekonać :)

These reminds me of Christmas 2 years ago in Como, Italy, where I was on Erasmus.. [for sure I will post a lot about this period of my life in future: D] There as well, were displayed colorful attractions on the facades of a number of most significant buildings in the town center such as town hall, theater, etc.
The pix are really worth seeing but I really recommend to go for a walk and check it out yourselves :)

VIII - Berlin - Karaoke

Na zdjęciu poniżej możecie zaobserwować największe karaoke świata!!!!
Jak to zobaczyłam to oczy w słup mi stanęły.. nie wiarygodne..
..na zdjęciu chyba nawet połowy ludzi nie ma..
..i oni naprawdę śpiewali.. jak łatwo się domyśleć dużo czasu tam nie spędziłam bo na trzeźwo takich fałszów to nie da się długo słuchać.. :P

In the picture below you can see the biggest karaoke ever!!
When I saw it I was astonished.. unbelievable..
..in the picture probably even half of people is not included..
..and they really sang.. well.. as you may guess I wasn’t too much time there because it’s impossible to handle that kind of singing out of tune without a drink for long :P

Różdżka / The wand

W tym spontanicznym poście chcę na chwilkę wrócić do fragmentu, którym rozpoczęłam ten blog. Czy jeszcze ktoś pamięta jak dostałam list, w którym poinformowano mnie o mojej czarodziejskiej mocy..?
Jak się okazuje mój tajemniczy doręczyciel wywiązał się z obietnicy i dostałam prezent!!
..teraz mam już różdżkę i jestem pełnowartościową czarodziejką [tudzież czarownicą, jak kto woli :P]

VII - Berlin - East Side Gallery

EAST SIDE GALLERY jest naprawdę godne uwagi. Na pozostałościach muru wymalowano ściana po ścianie fenomenalne murale. To zdecydowany „must” do zwiedzenia. Jest to galeria – pomnik dla wolności. Składa się z ok. 106 murali. Wystarczy dojechać zieloną linią metra do stacji końcowej: Warschauer Str. lub jedną z pozostałych 6 linii :)

EAST SIDE GALLERY is truly remarkable. On the remain part of the wall next to the river were painted phenomenal wall murals. That's a huge "must" to visit. This is a gallery – memorial for freedom. It consists of 106 murals in total. Just get in the green subway line to the end station: Warschauer Str. or use one of the other 6 lines :)
